Choosing a colour with us

Most of our clients arrive with a colour in mind, and a good few arrive with three. Either is fine. If you know the look you're after, we'll put it on the walls. If you don't, we're happy to suggest a scheme, or something that works with the colours you're keeping, often with photos of schemes we've done in houses like yours. Do try a tester in your own light before you decide.

We buy the paint ourselves, so choosing the colour is the only shopping you'll do. We're not tied to any maker either: Colin left the Dulux Select scheme years ago so we could pick the right paint for each job. That's why this page reads a bit like a walk round a paint shop.

Every sample below is cut from one of our own photos, so it shows the colour in the room it went into, not on the chart. Light changes everything. Try a tester.

Farrow & Ball colours we've used

Colour-coding radiators, cupboards and built-ins

Radiators, cupboard doors, a built-in TV unit: the things that usually stay white and shout for attention. Painted in the wall colour, they settle back into the room. It's an idea we suggest a lot, as these jobs show.

Radiators get an eggshell in the same colour as the walls, so they look like part of the room rather than something bolted on to it.

Frequently asked questions

Do you use Farrow & Ball paint?

Yes, a lot of it, as this page shows. We also use Little Greene, Coat and Dulux Trade inside, Dulux Weathershield on masonry and Sadolin on cedar and garden timber. We buy the paint ourselves, so all you choose is the colour.

Can you help us choose colours?

Happily. If you know the look you want, that's great. If not, we'll suggest a scheme, or something to go with the colours you're keeping, and show you photos of schemes we've done in houses like yours. It's worth trying a tester on your own walls before you decide.

Why do the samples on this page look different from the colour chart?

Because they're cut from our own photographs, in the light of the room each paint went into. The same colour changes from a north-facing hall to a sunny lounge, which is exactly why we'd never choose one from a screen. Try a tester first.

What does colour-coding mean?

Painting the things that usually stay white, like radiators, cupboard doors and built-in units, in the wall colour so they blend in. Radiators get an eggshell in the same colour. It's one of the ideas we suggest most often.

Can you paint the woodwork the same colour as the walls?

Yes. It's called colour-washing, and it suits a hall very well. In Chislehurst every skirting, door and frame went into Farrow & Ball Shaded White with the walls; in a Beckenham Victorian hall it was Coat Reverie, in Aqua Guard Matt on the woodwork.

The company that DOESN'T live up to its name.

Got a colour in mind, or three? Send us a photo of the room and we'll come and talk it through.
